John Chow Vs. Shoemaker Vs. Jason Calanis on Making Money from Twitter.
Want to make money from twitter? Course I do, but how could it be possible?
A couple days a go John Chow posted an interesting article about it: “Blog Marketing Vs. Email Marketing Vs. Twitter Marketing”
He made an experiment with Twitter by sent the following tweet about one of his Ads out to his followers on March 13. You know what? His tweet campaign resulted $306 of product sales within the first 24 hours! It’s awesome, huh?
Twitter seemed to be ideal for making money for some reason. First, all the URLs are cloaked behind a URL shorten service. You don’t really know if the link you’re clicking on is a normal link or an affiliate link. So if you’re an affiliate marketer, it is a wonderful media for you. Second, if you have 14 k followers as John Chow does, you have a chance to drive thousands unique visitors a day from twitter only!
Getting excited? Well, many people do. That’s why a little while ago Jason Calanis offered twitter $500k for three years for @questions as a suggested user in the sign-up process.
Wow, a half million dollars really is such a fantastic bid. Do you think he is bluffing? May be, but he had made a calculation for that. He was sure he would get about 250.000 new members for his service. That’s means if they pay him two dollars only for his service, he would have his money back. What about they have to pay him ten dollars for his service?
But is this calculation true? Shoemaker has another answer. There is no doubt Jason will has millions of followers, but will they actually care about what he is doing? There’s no such a guarantee! Shoemaker’s Twitter contest is really a good example. Before he started the contest, he had about 10k followers and got about 500 unique visitors from Twitter each day. By the end of the contest, successfully doubled his followers to 20k+ and now he has almost 23k. But a matter of fact is that the traffic to his site from Twitter is about the same.
So is it possible to make money from twitter? Yes, it is. John Chow had proved it. But you have to do it in the right way. Just remember what John Chow said: “like everything else, you have to present the right offer that is targeted at your followship (hey, I made a new word!). If you just spam your Twitter list with stuff your followship is not interested in, you can expect to lose them.” Good Luck!
